A leather jacket that is made at a high standard using premium quality materials and a leather jacket that incorporates a timeless design that won’t date. Most of the best designed leather jackets for young children have a unisex style which can be worn by both girls and boys.

A good (real) leather jacket for an adult or child can cost anywhere between $250 to $2000 depending on the brand and quality. The two main elements that determine the cost is the type of leather used to make the jacket and the design.

Leather Materials

The price of a leather jacket, including a kids’ leather jacket first and foremost comes down to the quality (and type of) leather. The country of origin sometimes can determine the price but these days there are so many countries outside of Italy that produce premium quality leather and make beautifully tailored jackets.

Different Types of Leather

• Cow - the most widely used type of leather

• Lamb - is very popular because of its lovely soft characteristics and is usually used in expensive apparel

• Ostrich – is considered one of the finest and most durable in the world and is currently used by many major fashion houses such as Hermes, Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. It has a ‘goose bump’ look because of the large follicles from which the feather grew.

• Goat, horse, pig, sheep, eel – just to name a few of the more commonly used skins but there are so many different sources from which leather is derived.

Napa leather – is any extremely soft and supple leather, it’s commonly found in high quality leather garments and goods such as lamb leather.

Full Grain Leather: refers to the upper section of the hide that has NOT been sanded or buffed in order to remove imperfections on the surface of the hide. The grain retains its natural state which allows the best fiber strength, providing greater durability. Natural Full-Grain surface will wear better than any other leather, it will develop a natural “Patina” and become more beautiful over time. The finest leather products are made from Full-Grain leather. Only the best raw hide is used to create Full-Grain or Top-Grain leather. Full grain leather is the most expensive because in order to get full grain leather that has no blemishes is derived from the perfect cut.

Top Grain leather: is the second highest grade, the surface has been sanded or buffed in order to remove any imperfections on the surface due to insect bites, healed scars or brands.

Vegan leather: or otherwise known as fake leather is basically man made leather that will deteriorate within a short amount of time, elements like cracks and peeling will occur and this cannot be mended.

Important: Make sure that the garment (leather jacket) you purchase is made from REAL leather. Only real leather will stand the test of time and offer the quality that is worth paying extra for.

Any parent will know that a child will not wear anything that is uncomfortable, no matter how good it looks! A childs’ leather jacket should be made from soft Napa leather to allow ease of movement. A real leather jacket for children must be made from a light weight material which will make it much more comfortable and they’re more likely to want to wear it.
